Show Notes
“I like the concert hall… I like this tradition of… you sit there quietly, you listen intensely… I like that, and I suppose people go because they also do… and I write for those kinds of people…”
“Actually, I think if Beethoven had a drumkit, some of those symphonies would just… [*clicks tongue*]… just that extra bit more… I suppose that’s a heretical statement!”
Jakub Jankowski interrupts work on a string octet to chat with David John Lang about the enigmatic process of discovering a piece as you compose it. Why is he drawn to writing music for the concert hall? Why does he like to use pencil and paper so much? And what’s with those surprisingly stylistic juxtapositions that occasionally appear in his music?
